How to Become an Expert and Build a Successful Business

Have you ever struggled with feeling like an expert?

I know that I have.

We’ve all had thoughts of wondering whether we know enough, are smart enough or are good enough to offer what we offer.

It’s a conversation I often times find myself having with my clients and my community and therefore I’ve decided that I want to have it with you.

Here’s the truth:

YOU ARE AN EXPERT. Today, I am going to prove it to you.

First, if you ware trying to figure out what your expertise is, I want you to ask yourself these things:

  1. What are you really good at?

  2. What do you enjoy?

  3. What do you constantly find yourself helping others with?

  4. What comes naturally to you that seems to be a challenge for others?

The beautiful thing about humanity is that we are all born with gifts and talents. Sometimes we just have to uncover them. The first thing you want to do is discover what you are an expert at already that you enjoy and serves others.

If you already know these things but still struggle to feel like an expert here’s what I want you to know.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO KNOW EVERYTHING TO BE AN EXPERT.

That’s the biggest lie that most of us get caught up in.

I’ll use myself as an example. I’m a Business + Online Marketing Coach and I help women grow their businesses online with organic strategies. That means that truth be told I don’t know much about paid advertising methods or strategies. I also don’t know EVERYTHING there is to know about the online marketing space. Here’s the thing though, does anybody? Do even the experts of experts know EVERYTHING?

No. Everyone has their own thing they specialize in or know.

I know organic marketing and can therefore help small businesses with a small budget convert clients. Someone else might know how to help big businesses with big budgets how to run paid advertising to scale. That doesn’t make either one of us less of an expert. It just makes us an expert in our area.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE AN EXPERT TO EVERYBODY.

Here’s the other thing. You don’t have to be able to help everyone, you just have to be able to help someone. If you can think of at least one person you can help, then you’re good. Experts don’t focus on serving everyone, they focus on serving very specific someones.

EVEN EXPERTS CONSTANTLY LEARN AND GROW.

Lastly, it’s important to remember to always find ways to perfect your craft and grow. Find ways to develop yourself, stay up to date and get better at what you do. It doesn’t mean that you aren’t an expert already, it just means you are becoming a better one.

You are an expert. Don’t ever let yourself feel less than because someone knows or says something different than you. The best experts don’t say things that are not contradictory or that are always true, they simply boldly state what they do know and what is true for them. Know what is true for you and boldly say it without worrying about others. As long as you can help someone, your expertise is valid.
